Bob’s birthday bash in the bush

Former Australian Greens leader and renowned environmentalist Bob Brown celebrated his 80th birthday by reconnecting with one of Huon Valley’s premier natural attractions, leading friends from across the country on a memorable walk through the Franklin Forest.

The group commenced their journey at the Loop Track, immersing themselves in the lush landscapes and rich biodiversity that the forest offers.

Their leisurely trek concluded at the historic McMullen’s Mill site, where a bus awaited to transport them back.

The day was filled with photography and the creation of lasting memories, as visitors departed with a deep appreciation for this special forest.

Reflecting on the experience, Dr Brown noted that it had been several years since his last visit to the Franklin Forest.

He expressed pleasure at the improvements made during his absence, particularly the new signage and track work that have enhanced the accessibility and educational value of the area.

His companions echoed this sentiment, remarking on the fortune of having such an extraordinary natural sanctuary in close proximity to local communities.

The Franklin Forest’s allure extends beyond national borders, as evidenced by recent entries in the visitor’s book from individuals hailing from the USA and Canada, who enjoyed their Christmas walks in the forest.

The Friends of Franklin Forest, a dedicated group committed to preserving and promoting the area’s natural and historical significance, have been instrumental in these enhancements.

Their efforts ensure that both locals and visitors can continue to enjoy and learn from the forest’s unique environment.

For those interested in exploring the Franklin Forest, the Friends of Franklin Forest offer regular guided walks and maintain self-guided tracks, providing opportunities for all to engage with this remarkable natural treasure.
