We love cherries

Yes, at last we get to taste some of those delicious delights of the Huon Valley, some of the best in the world in the best place in the world.

And thanks to Lucaston Park Orchards’, Matthew Griggs, the first crop of cherries and a smattering of raspberries went on sale last weekend at the famous Green Cherry Shed just outside Huonville.

The shed will be open from now on to supply top-quality cherries, raspberries, and strawberries in time for the Christmas season.

The early season cherries on sale at the moment are Royal Tioga and the Early Sweet.

Other varieties will be on sale when they are ready to be picked.

Mr Griggs said weather conditions had been ideal this growing season and he estimates a crop of 350 tonnes of cherries and about eight tonnes of raspberries will be picked.

The orchard relies on a team of about 80 pickers and 50 packers for the labour-intensive task of delivering the quality product in tip-top condition.

A tradition his family has continued for generations and is a staple of the Huon Valley economy for more than 100 years.
