Huonville’s Grand Hotel owner Georgie Roland has been recognised by the hospitality industry at the Tasmanian Hospitality Association annual award night in Hobart last week.

Ms Roland was presented with the Premier’s Award for Contribution to the Community.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff was on hand to present Ms Roland with her certificate.

Mr Rockliff said it was due recognition for Ms Roland, a 30-year veteran of the hospitality industry who has spent the past 15 years at Huonville’s popular Grand Hotel, the last five years as owner.

“Georgie has demonstrated excellent service to her community, and I commend and congratulate her for all her achievements,” Mr Rockliff said.

“She is a remarkable person.”

Ms Roland said it was “awesome” to win the state award and admits it is a huge achievement.

“When they were talking about the person who was to receive the award and all she had done for the community over the past 30 years, I thought gee, she has achieved a lot and must be a remarkable person,” Ms Roland said.

“Little did I realise then they were talking about me, despite my son nudging me and saying, Mum, they’re talking about you.”

“It is a big achievement and demonstrates what type of community we have here in Huon Valley.

“I like to give back to the community and will not refuse a worthy cause who needs help.”

Those causes Ms Roland and the Grand Hotel support are many and varied.

They range from fund-raising for people of all ages who may have terminal illnesses or need long term support, to three football and two cricket clubs who need financial assistance to compete.

Mental health is a priority area, as is most activities where children are involved.

A prime example was last week’s Huon Valley Halloween Trail which started at the Grand Hotel before setting off down the main street of Huonville.

The framed certificate is on display in the public bar at the Grand Hotel.
