A new life for Cartela

Following years of stagnation on its repair, a funding boost from the Tasmanian Government will help to bring new life again to the 111-year-old steamship Cartela once again.

The Tasmanian Government announced a $1 million grant for the Cartela in early February, which will be used to build and install a ship lift for the steamship as part of the Franklin Maritime Precinct.

This will finally allow the Steamship Cartela Trust to progress on restoration of the vessel in a dry dock as has been planned for the past few years.

Premier and Minister for Tourism Jeremy Rockliff said that the Tasmanian Government has been a strong supporter of the restoration project over the past decade and has previously provided $493,000 to support the Trust in progressing its vision.

“Our government recognises the tourism potential of restoring the ship to its former glory and it is an important part of our vision for the future of the Franklin Foreshore,” expressed Premier Rockliff.
