Telling stories to the world

A peak inside Jacq Ellem’s recording studio for her award-winning fiction podcast Tales From Three Corners. (PS)

A storyteller in the Huon is making a big impact on the world stage – all from inside her recording studio in a closet.

Copywriter Jacq Ellem branched out into the world of podcasting, after working extensively within radio and producing.

“I was trying my hand at writing something more than an ad,” explained Ms Ellem.

“I went to a writing group to work on it and got absolutely smashed which made me think I wasn’t meant to write.

“Following this, I went to the Terror Australis Festival and there was an incredible speaker named Angela Savage, who said write what you know.

“I know audio so maybe what I’m writing is something that needs to be read aloud.”

Ms Ellem already had a folio of short stories behind her and with the help of a friend in the sound production sphere looking for a creative project, turned her stories from words on a page to a soundscape.

While Ms Ellem admits the process was fun, the podcasts were turned away from a publisher, who stated that the project could be run by itself, leading to Ms Ellem developing her own podcast now run on nine different platforms.

“I didn’t know anything about podcasts,” Ms Ellem said.

“It was only after I was laid off during COVID and returned back to work after doing some fairly straight-laced radio advertising that I said to my friend Postie ‘Let’s get this going’.”
