The Lady Nelson replica ship was recently docked at the Cygnet Marina, setting sail on Thursday, April 7 with University of Tasmania students in a new
venture for both students and the crew.
The University of Tasmania has spent the past few years developing and organising a new marine medicine course focused on planning and delivery of medical care in various aquatic settings.
The sail on Thursday was the first workshop of its kind for the University.
“This is the first marine medicine course of its kind, medicine for closed offshore and inland waters and all of the students aboard are either doctors, nurses or paramedics,” said Dr Edi Albert, Senior Lecturer in Remote and Extreme Environment Medicine at University of Tasmania.
“What we’re doing is training in aspects of marine medicine, which is a huge subject that is often poorly taught and poorly understood.”
