The race started back in 1945, when a small group of Sydney boating enthusiasts decided it would be more enjoyable for their planned annual post-Christmas cruise to Hobart to make it a race.

There is no other regular yachting race in the world that attracts such huge media coverage as the Sydney Hobart yacht race.
Television production company IMG, makers of the Spirit of Yachting television series, covered the recent race to be aired by broadcasters in several territories around the world.
The production company then approached the Wooden Boat Centre to include short features of the people, places and work at the Wooden Boat Centre in their television coverage.
