Local hero back home

Remembrance Day, last Thursday, November 11, marked the return home of a Cygnet local’s memorabilia to the Cygnet RSL Sub-Branch.

Secretary of the Cygnet RSL Sub-Branch, George Fikerle started the Remembrance Day ceremony sharply at 11am before Sub-Branch president, Laurie Storan gave an address to those who had attended.

“I am fortunate enough to have visited Gallipoli and the Western Front and I am quite amazed that when you go there, you can see the ground they fought over and the weather conditions they endured, it is just amazing how anyone survived,” Mr Storan expressed.

“Remembrance Day is not only about remembering our war dead.”

“It is also about the injured, the wounded and the sick, it is for remembering those that served their country in time of war,” Mr Storan concluded.

It was the story however of Sergeant John James Dwyer that left an imprint on everyone’s minds that day.

Sergeant Dwyer’s family, who attended the Remembrance Day event and presented the Cygnet RSL Sub-Branch with a portrait of Sergeant Dwyer along with miniatures of his medals and his bayonet, said that they were immensely proud of his legacy and what he stood for.
